Let’s talk about something real. Something that affects half the population but still doesn’t get the attention it deserves: menopause — and more importantly, the way it can shake up your mental health.
If you're navigating this season of life, whether you're in the early stages of peri-menopause, going through menopause itself, or well into post-menopause, you're not alone. Millions of women are walking this path right alongside you — some silently, some confused, many feeling dismissed.
Let’s break the silence and shine a light on what’s really going on.
What Is Menopause, Really?
- Menopause officially starts 12 months after your last period.
- Peri-menopause is the transitional phase leading up to that point—where hormones start shifting.
- Post-menopause is everything after that
It’s all triggered by changes in hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — which impact everything from your skin to your brain to your heart. No wonder it feels like your whole world has flipped upside down.
The Symptoms: It’s Not Just Hot Flushes
Did you know there are 34+ known symptoms of menopause? Here are some that can hit hard, especially mentally and emotionally:
- Hot flushes & night sweats
- Difficulty sleeping
- Anxiety & low mood
- Brain fog
- Hair loss
- Joint pain
- Changes in libido
- Vaginal dryness
- Bloating
- Weight gain
- Mood swings
- Dry, itchy skin
- Heart palpitations
- Breast tenderness
- Low confidence
- Feeling stressed or overwhelmed
And let’s be clear: any of these can impact your mental health. You’re not going mad. You’re not being dramatic. You’re going through something real.
Mental Health & Menopause: Why It Hits Hard
The connection between menopause and mental wellbeing is deep and often overlooked. Here’s why:
1. Many menopause symptoms mirror mental health conditions (like anxiety, low mood, brain fog).
2. Each symptom on its own can affect your confidence, self-image, and daily function.
3. Peri-menopause is hard to diagnose, and women are often misdiagnosed or ignored.
4. There’s still stigma — menopause hasn’t been openly discussed for generations.
5. We’re not always believed — even by healthcare professionals.
6. Midlife brings other stressors — kids, careers, ageing parents, relationships — it can all pile up.
And here’s the truth: you can’t separate your physical health from your mental health. It’s all connected.
Busting the Myths
Let’s debunk a few common misconceptions:
- “You’re too young to be going through menopause.” (Peri-menopause can start in your 30s!)
- “If you’re not getting hot flushes, it’s not menopause.” (Not true.)
- “Your symptoms aren’t that bad.” (Only you get to say how you feel.)
- “It’s all about HRT.” (Hormone replacement therapy helps many — but it’s not the whole story.)
So, What Can You Do?
Start by reclaiming your power. Here’s how:
1. Find your community: Look for peer groups and menopause-specific support. Talking helps.
2. Practice mindfulness: Meditation, journaling, or even a walk in nature can reset your nervous system.
3. Move your body: Yoga, strength training, or dancing in the kitchen — it all counts.
4. Own your story: Talk about it, educate yourself, and advocate for yourself. You're allowed to ask questions — and expect answers.
Menopause at Work: You Deserve Support
Too many women are struggling in silence at work. It shouldn’t be that way. Here's how employers can help:
What Employers Can Do:
- Create a menopause policy.
- Educate all staff (yes, including men!) on menopause basics.
- Encourage open conversations to reduce shame and stigma.
- Offer flexibility—remote meetings, lighter uniforms, fans, easy access to toilets.
- Provide time and space for informal peer support.
What Should a Workplace Menopause Policy Include?
- Clear definitions and purpose
- Symptom education
- Confidentiality guidelines
- Expectations for staff and managers
- A simple template for menopause-related discussions
In Closing…
Menopause isn't just about periods stopping—it's about identity, energy, emotions, and life evolving. But it’s not the end. It’s a powerful new beginning.
Talk about it. Ask for help. And most importantly — be kind to yourself. You're not broken. You're becoming.
